I Aspire to be Happy: Are You Happy With Yourself?

I don’t know if you’re a Beyonce fan, but one of my favorite intros from her was from her song, Pretty Hurts. It is a pageant scene from her music video where the host asks her, “What is your aspiration in life” and she answers, “My aspiration in life would be to be happy”. I have never been more struck by a line. It took me into a spiral of introspection for sure and I had to ask myself if I was happy. As cringey as it is to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself some deep shit like that, I did. Mannn did I cry. Hahaha, let’s not even try to visualize me watching myself cry in the mirror girl pleaasseee. But that question to myself was the beginning of the most transformative time in my life. I had to sit with myself and figure out why I was unhappy. I obviously was for the fact that I cried for hours about it. Don’t you hate it when emotions hit when you get asked a question after holding in your emotions for so long? Lmao. The tears always come flowing like you’ve been deprived of crying your whole life. But, no, I needed it. I needed that moment with myself so I could get my ass up and deal with it.

So how am I dealing with it? Yes, deal- ING with it because for me it has been a continuous journey. Happiness is a choice. Happiness is a feeling you must wake up every day and decide to have. It is not easy when things are chaotic and most days can be, but to not drive myself utterly insane, I must choose happiness. You’re probably like, “Girl, easier said that done”, but it is true. So, the question would be what does choosing happiness look like? Well, in my little years of experience so far I’d say practicing gratefulness and indulging in the little things that make you light up on a daily basis.

Gratefulness is so important because it gives so much good energy back to you. I thoroughly believe that exercising gratefulness for everything opens the realm of abundance in our lives which in turn makes us happy. And when I mentioned indulging in the little things, I meant romanticizing the parts of our day that we enjoy or the little things we do know we enjoy we can add them to our days. So, that could be listening to a certain song, making that bomb a$$ matcha latte, treating yourself to a comfort snack, taking a walk or even snuggling up in bed with your 10 pillows mounting you in extreme comfort while you enjoy some double chocolate fudge Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream as you watch your favorite tv show. Intentionally add these things to your day for your own benefit; Happiness.

Notice in all my examples I didn’t mention anyone else in these scenarios, just YOU. It is also important to remember that your happiness is your responsibility. It is solely dependent on you. Make sure you are doing everything you can do to make yourself happy, not anything tailored to anyone else. It is never everrr a great idea to rely on another person for your happiness. You have everything you need to create that for yourself. Prioritize yourself and your needs and wants.

As the outro of “Pretty Hurts” asks,

“When you’re alone all by yourself

And you’re lyin’ in your bed

Reflection stares right into you

Are you happy with yourself?

You stripped away the masquerade

The illusion has been shed

Are you happy with yourself?”

I really do hope that your answer is YES.
